If Not Now, When?

I had no idea when I bought a website that it would come with a blog. How convenient! I’ve always wanted to write. Who knows if anyone will read, but I certainly can write! As I sit here, staring at a page in MY BLOG (how cool), between Photoshop, my website editor, and my two-year-old (who should be asleep but isn’t because let’s face it, she runs this household), I feel the start of something grand. I hope I can remember to keep up with this blog. I had a LiveJournal years and years ago. In fact, I still have one, but I haven’t written in it in God-knows-how-long. I kept up with it pretty regularly in my early twenties. I don’t really know why; I don’t think anyone read it. This blog will likely see the same fate. That’s okay. It’s cathartic for me, and since you are here…thanks!

And hello!

This journal will likely include a multitude of photographs, as that is the point of this whole shebang. I cannot wait to begin sharing those. I’m not going to sit here and say that photography has always been my passion, because it hasn’t. I mean, I’ve always liked taking pictures. Who doesn’t? My passion has always been music, but music is a hard sell. You can’t offer to write someone songs on Facebook and have them come running, ready to hand you crisp hundred for a tune. But people are crazy about photographs of themselves and their families; probably because deep down we’re all a little narcissistic, eager to see ourselves in our best light and hang those images on our walls, real and virtual. And people will readily pay…enough to get by…for those images, printed or digital, and they will show their friends and family. And then their friends and family think “Hey, I want awesome photos of ME on MY wall, real and virtual!” And so on, and so forth.

And so photography, equally creative and artistic in nature to music, lends itself more readily to the concept of turning a profit. I get to be creative and skillful in a different way, and actually make money doing it. It’s a win for you and me both, really. πŸ˜‰

I have to add that this whole concept stayed way in the back of my mind while I said over and over again, “I could do that…I SHOULD do that…why am I not doing that?” Until one day, when I had the money, Kenny said for the 43029th time, “You should buy a camera. Start taking pictures for people. You could do that. You’re just as good as anyone. Etc.” He didn’t say “etc.”. He said other supportive things, which were…oh, you get the point.
And so then, for whatever reason, that 43029th time did the trick.
I did it.

With a little luck, I can keep doing it. Here’s hoping!

  1. You’re gonna do great! I love the style and realness of your pictures without being too over edited and filtered. You let us see the happy in people, you don’t filter in the happy.

  2. Now……. is the best season of your life. Your love of life and laughter shines brightly in the photos that you take of these families. I personally know that you will be great at this and the pictures will continue to bless others and your family. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜
